February 9, 2018

Yeshivat Frisch junior Nina Gerszberg and sophomore Caroline Waxman were named recent winners in the the New Jersey region’s Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, presented annually by the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers. The competition accepts submissions in 29 different categories of writing and art, and is open to all teens from seventh to 12th grade across the United States and Canada. Hundreds of thousands of submissions are entered each year.

Waxman won a Gold Key award in the poetry category for her piece titled “Deceitful Senses,” along with a Silver Key in the short story category for her submission “Incomplete Knowledge Can Be Dangerous.” Meanwhile, Gerszberg won four Honorable Mentions in the category of flash fiction (fiction that stays under 1000 words), for her pieces titled “A clock,” “Thank You,” “Father Like Son,” and “The Sound of Shattered Glass.”

Both Waxman and Gerszberg are part of the “Cougars Write Together” club at Frisch, which meets bimonthly to workshop creative writing pieces, learn new ideas about writing as well as play different writing games. Gerszberg is a student co-head of the club, with English department member Dr. Anne Berkman serving as faculty adviser.
